I recently got a couple of bids for a heatpump system for the second level of my house and I was wondering if someone could explain to me - unbiaed - the difference between a Goodman and American Standard? I compared apples to apples - warrenty info., same SEER and tonage, etc. and the bid for the American Standard was quite a bit higher. Are Goodman's any "good"?
Thanks in advance!
Thanks in advance!

Goodman will be a builders grade unit. Will it get the job done? Sure it will! But the unit is only about 25% of your purchase. Installation is worth every cent if done correctly.

You have the bids?
They should show the M/N of both units.
Both Goodman and American Standard (American Standard is a division of Trane) have very good websites. I would suggest you look there and compare. What will you be looking for? their efficiencies (SEER-summer, and AFUE-winter). The higher those values, the better the units.
Airman is right, it all depends on the proper installation of the units, but assuming the bids are from the same contractor, installation will not be a factor, just the performance of the systems

I find its best to get what ever the guy sells that has been around there for the longest time. Get 3 bids .Also think about how long you will be in the home. If for the next 10 years go for the 10 year warranty on the unit and a V/S blower

If installed properly they will both physically perform well for many years if maintained properly as the others have stated. The difference I see is that A.Standard is much quieter than a Goodman.

Each quote was from two different installers - recommended by friends. We plan to be in this house for the next few years but would like to move up in given time. I guess the best thing for me to do is to have each person give me a quote on both systems (A. Standard and Goodman) so I can really compare apples to apples. When talking installation, what particular questions should I be asking?
Thanks in advance!
