Hello,

Im interested in knowing what type of DIY solutions people can think of concerning my situation. I would like to post pics to make things easier, but i dont have em online, and I also can't post attachment, so words will have to suffice.

Theres basically a big living room area which Is divided roughly in half by a fairly large archway. Id rather it were two fully divided areas, rather than this semi division I have momentarily. I was thinking to fasten a thick wooden frame into the archway: so imagine a frame like a capital 'T' but with a double base. The space between the two 'bases of the T' would serve as the doorway. The remaining open area which isn't for the door I was thinking to cover with drywall. Not sure but I figured I would be able to either nail or screw the drywall into the wooden frame to fasten it. Also of course some of that thick insulating foam/glass fiber stuff between the two sheets of drywall.

How realistic is that plan? Most important for me is that it be removable at a later point and that it cause as little possible damage to the house, seeing as it's being rented. I obviously don't plan to try anything without discussing it with the owner first, but I imagine that the less holes i have to drill into his house etc, the more willing he'll be to accept. How many holes will likely need to be drilled? Looking for a rough estimate here.....are we talking single or double digits? Lastly, what other type of permanent changed to the current foundations will I have to make? I

thanks in advance

I've filled in archways. Just drill and screw on 2x boards allowing for sheetrock thickness on each side. Screw everything so it can be dismantled without a lot of crowbars-yanking. Leaving screw or nail holes is never hardly an issue as they can be filled and painted over. You do not to go overkill on the amount of screws as this is not going to really be very structural.

If you know in advance that this project WILL be dismantled in the future, then I would not even bother to mud the joint created between the old archway and your filler wall. Just caulk it.
