I plan on moving my ceiling light in the dining room about 12" to center it. Above the dining room is attic space so I have no problem bracing the new light location. I have plenty of wire so I can move the junction box. Once I move the light, I will have a hole where the old box was located. I plan on cutting enough of the drywall to put in a proper patch anchored to the joists. The rest of my ceiling has the "popcorn" texture. At my local home improvement store I saw an aerosol can of the texture made for patching areas. 2 questions: 1) Can I get a quick sanity check to make sure I am not over-thinking this project? 2) Has anyone used this aerosol can texture? Are you happy with the results?

Electrically your plan sound fine.
Have you considered just adding 1 or 2 pieces of wood to bridge where the old hole was? The strips would only need to extend a couple of inches past the old hole. Secure to the drywall. Just screw the new patch to the wood strips.

PCBoss, thank you for the suggestion on the patch. Seems like a much less invasive solution.

I removed a half wall with banisters a while back that connected to a piece of wood the length of the wall on my ceiling. I had popcorn on all the ceilings so it left a large area untextured. I tried the canned stuff and it was awful. it covered about a 4"X6" block with texture and the rest bounced off and onto the dropcloth. 1 can may be enough to just cover the small hole, but it won't look exactly like the rest of the ceiling, and you will have to paint over it to match the color, as the color from the can is a yellowish-white. I'm now in the process of scraping the popcorn from the whole house as part of my renovations.
