I had an A/C repair on a 3 ton Carrier unit in Central Florida. I think I am being grossly overcharged.
Does a 3 ton Carrier a/c require 9 pounds of R410a if all of the refrigerant leaked out? Is $100 for the first pound and $80 for every additional pound sound fair. I was quoted a price for labor + materials. The total for the r410a was nearly $800!

If that's material price only then yes it's high. get some more quotes. Was this a leak or what ? Why do you need refrigerant ?

OUTRAGEOUS !!!
As a reference I am using Carrier's 3-ton Comfort Series, which has a 13 seer. The unit comes from factory with a full charge of 5.25 pounds of Puron Refrigerant (R-410A).
A 5-ton unit of this same family has a full charge of 8.75 pounds of refrigerant.
Good thing you brought your question up to this forum

Doh !! Guess I should open my eye's when I read. :D
If it leaked out the repair should be way more than the refrigerant. There's a bit more involved with 410 than there is with R-22.

Agree with everyone else. Get another technician/company.
That's one huge leak !!! Adding that much freon (if it even holds 9 pounds) is not a good idea without finding the leak first !!!
Adding freon should only be done as a temporary measure so that a leak check and repair can be scheduled at a more convenient time.

Even if just half the R410a leaked out. The old freon has tobe pulled out and all new put in. As what is in there is not R410a anymore. Then the leak found fixed new drier and vac the unit down . Way down.
