Farming and Agriculture - fertilizing near a lake

I have about 70 acres lakefront in East Tx. I want to add fertilizer to the land without endangering the aquatic life. Are there any eco friendly fertilizers that could be applied to the land and safe for our swimming buddies?

Many lake areas ban phosphorous fertilizers. Others ban all chemical fertilizers with recommendations of planting native species that prefer the local soil without fertilizer.

The first step should be a soil test. Your local Cooperative Extension Agent can help you with this and provide you with recommended alternatives to chemical fertilizers and grass seed and plant varieties that will do well in your native soil. If you do fertilize, do not spread fertilizer within 75 feet of the lake.

Protect the riparian zone and help prevent run off at lake's edge by planting sedges, ferns, or other species that your Cooperative Extension Agent can recommend. The agent can also recommend species for planting lower and upper bank areas in your locale for further creating a buffer zone from the lake and to prevent runoff. Keep in mind that native plant species are preferred. They can survive the extremes of Mother Nature, do not require coddling, and tend not to be invasive.
