I noticed last week that we were running out of hot water after 1 1/2 showers. We changed both top and bottom heating elements. We are having to keep resetting the top element ( red) reset button. This tank is only about 2 years old and it's a 40 gallon electric hot water heater. It's a sudden change. Do you have any suggestions?

Replace both thermostats.
