I have self-diagnosed my KitchenAid dishwasher (model KUDI01ILWH1) as having a bad motor and/or pump. The water fills, and then the unit hums for a bit but does not circulate the water (no arm movement, no wet sides, etc.). The water pumps out when I hit the "Cancel" button.

I plan to order the entire Motor and Pump assembly and then attempt to replace it myself. I'm a novice handyman - homeowner for 11 years - and I don't mind replacing parts if I have some basic instructions and "gotchas" to read beforehand. Is there a resource that can guide me through this replacement?

Alternately, should I just pay a qualified service person to do the replacement? All opinions are welcome. Thanks.

The Kitchen Aid Dishwashers has a 5 year part warranty on the motor. Have you checked to see if there is any debris that would prevent the motor from turning? If you take the sump apart inside there is a cover to remove to gain access to the impeller area to check for debris.

No luck there... my kitchen was remodeled 6 years ago, which is when we bought new appliances. Just my luck, eh?

No, I have not checked for debris yet. I will check it tonight if I can figure out how to get the sump apart. Is that a diagramed procedure or do I just have to "wing it?"

There is a total of four T-20 torx screws that hold the top pump housing on. One of the screws is under the tubing that goes up to feed the upper spray arm, so it is a bit tricky to get to. Under that there is one or two T-15 torx screws (depends on the model) that need to be removed to get the cover off where the impeller area is.

OK, I took the sump apart as you suggested. There was a single petrified corn kernel in one of the cover slits and a little bit of paper in the screen edges. I cleaned the gunked up dishwash powder from the crevices and put it all back together. Then, I started the dishwasher. No luck.

The dishwasher fills with water, and then there is a very quiet hum... and nothing else. Shall I order the motor + pump assembly now, or should I try something else?

Did you take the cover off inside and inspect the area where the food chopper/disposer is? Also try rotating the chopper by hand to see if the motor turns.

Yes, I had the chopper area cover off. There were little bits of paper in the edges of the screen behind the chopper. The chopper would NOT turn.

I have the same problem. Did replacing the pump and motor fix the problem. While researching the problem I found the follow link which describes how to replace the motor and pump assembly. http:// www.partselect.com/xq/aspx/inventory.973499/qx/pPartDetail.htm?SourceCode=5&

Pump & Motor (part 14 on Whirlpool "Pump And Motor Parts" diagram) unit was replaced Friday. My dishwasher is working properly again. At first, it was louder than before, but after running a complete cycle, it seems to have settled down and is now back to it's former "quiet" self. The dishes/utensils actually get washed now! :)

The old motor was completely shot - disintegrated cam shaft & impeller area, with lots of "dirt" inside. These motors are supposed to last more than 6 years, aren't they? Oh well. :wall:
