I'm not sure what forum to put this in, so I'll try here...

I'm trying to mount a railing up the stairs of a 200 year old stone house. The wall that I'm trying to mount onto has long been plastered over, and so when I tried to drill into it to put anchors, sometime the drill bit went right in too easily(I guess between stones), and other times it would go in an inch or so and just stop.

I just bought a masonry bit and a hammer drill, but still can't get anyhwere in those solid spots. So I'm now stuck.

Can anyone offer any ideas? Isn't there a war to drill into a solid stone? Or is there a better way to mount onto such a wall?

I've always chosen another route. Now, I'm not a contractor but I do buy, fix-up and sell houses, so I have some experience. If you insist on drilling into the stone be prepared to go through a few bits, have someone drizzle water on the bit to keep it cool, and have lots of patience.

Is there any other way? Can you put posts into the floor and frame off the posts? Can you make a railing out of metal that can take long spans? Be creative find something besides drilling into solid stone, solid stone that is holding up your building.
