I'm getting ready to do a total refinish on 1950's pine floors. There is evidence that someone has tried to do it before...without much sucess. The direction of all the flooring was laid in one direction. It just so happens that the hallway is running left to right instead of flowing with the hallway. What is the best way to sand the hall...drum, belt, palm sander? I know I can't sand against the grain, but it sure seems endless if I have to do this with a palm sander. Secondly, after all the floors are sanded should there be any conditioner applied to the bare floor before staining/finishing? Thanks, Tim

Random orbital sander!! U-sand, Superbee, or Trio.

You may be sanding it again!!! Staining pine(and Maple) are not for the first timer!!! They do not take stain well. Blotchy appearence is likely to happen.

I have heard of guys tinting the finish with stain, instead of staining the wood grain.

Water popping and a wood conditioner help, but donnot guarantee a blotchy free job.
