I live in a 12 year old Florida house on a slab. I recently replaced the float assembly on my master bath toilet. The new part kept the water level about an inch below the previous level in the tank and I had to hold the handle down to get enough water to properly flush. Later that day, I started to smell sewer gas. There is no sign of any leaks anywhere and the toilet bowl is not loose. I can try to get another type of float that will allow more water for flushing but will that solve anything? I have plunged the toilet thinking something was stuck in the trap, but the water goes down just fine.

Thanks
Barney

Barney: welcome to the forums! You can adjust the fill valve to allow enough water to come up to about 5/8" from the top of the overflow tube. This should take care of having enough water for a complete flush without holding the handle. As far as the smell, is there an adjacent shower/tub or sink that is seldom used? The ptrap could be dry and needs filling. Now, if you are sure the toilet is firmly set on it's base properly, you may have a venting problem. When you flush the toilet, if the vent is occluded, it will suck air from any source possible, which could be your sink, meaning it will evacuate the water column from the ptrap, allowing gasses to enter. Check it out and let us know.

Sounds to me like the wax ring under the toilet is not sealed properly. Even though your toilet is mounted to the floor properly, your wax ring can still be bad. Change the ring.
