Hi I have a 3 phase water heater to replace. The 4 wires are green being the ground. And three other black wires that have ends taped one with blue one with red tape on the end. the last no tape. New heater connection are different than old. My Question is there any order that these wires get conneccted to the allen wrench lugs on the heater. Looking at connection if I remember right first two lug areas had wires running from them but the third lug had none that I saw. This is 3kw 208 volt heater that has been pre wired at the factory. I just never have hooked one up so I was wondering do I just run one wire to each lug?

L1-------L2-------L3-------Neutral------------Ground
Black----Red-----Blue-----White or Gray-------Green*

(common practice1)

THIS is YOUR system:)

*Ground may also be
Green/yellow striped or a bare copper wire

(alternative practice2)
Brown---Orange---yellow---Gray or White------Green
L1-------L2--------L3-------Neutral-----------Ground _________________________________________________

Conductors of a three phase system are usually identified by a color code, to allow for balanced loading and to assure the correct phase rotation for induction motors. Colors used may adhere to International Standard IEC 60446, older standards, or to no standard at all, and may vary even within a single installation. For example, in the U.S. and Canada, different color codes are used for grounded (earthed) and ungrounded systems.

Since your electrician wired up using only black colored cable, he is allowed to mark the wiring this way to identify the legs. Make sure the tape that he put on stays on, do not remove it. Your WH should be marked L1, L2, L3, GND, so now you have to earn the merit badge and complete the job (hehehehe):p .

Hope this helps.

Good luck!

this is not a typical do it yourself situation. I do not know anywhere 3 phase power is available in a residence.

I presume this is at a work situation. Being as such, unless you understand what you are doing, you really should not be doing such work.

Now with that said, I will still offer a bit of advice in the form of questions.

Is this heater the same size (kW) as the one being replaced? Is there any motor load on the heater?
