Hello,
My GE SxS refrigerator (GSS22KGMACC) stopped cooling a week ago. The eveporator was completely frozen with frost even on the back wall of the freezer. Someone told me to defrost the freezer and see if that solved the problem. Everything was fine, but one week later the problem is back.

I got the wire diagram from under the fridge, but it is not readable. I can not make out the connector names or pin numbers. After reading around on the internet, I decided to just try replacing the evaporator thermistor (which I did) and the main controller board.

The new controller board looks different from the original. The parts place told me that the new one was changed by GE to WR55X10550. Problem is that it has some instructions that I don't understand: "Step 2 - eliminate thermistor wire in pin 2 of J1 connector. If no wire in pin 2, procede to step 3. Note: this step only applicable for the following models: ALL BOTTOM FREEZER MODELS. ENCODER models with the following serial prefixes: TD2, VD2, ZD2, AF2, DF2, FF2, GF2, HF2, LF2, MF2, RF2, SF2."

I do not understand if I need to do this step or not. There is a white wire in pin 2. but I don't know what the ENCODER is, so can't tell serial number prefix. It doesn't seem right to cut the thermistor wire. Can you tell me how to procede? What is the ENCODER?

Thanks,
Phil

Before we go on. Were you SURE it "was fine" for that week? Maybe from the get go, it was slowly icing over again.

I need to know if the defrost water made it's way down to the evaporation tray.

Yes, it was probably icing over over again. The evaporation tray was full of water. I vacuumed it out with a wet vac.

I gave up trying to fix it myself. Yesterday I called GE Service. They originally gave me an appointment for next Thursday. I asked if they could escalate and look for cancellations. Two hours later, they called me and rescheduled for today.

The guy just left: He changed the heater, the main board and the thermostat AND he gave me a new main board in a sealed box to take back to the parts store and get a refund. He did all of this for free even though my warranty expired 3 years ago!!!

I'm glad I didn't call Sears:)
