I'm about to install a shower in my basement. Before I put the base in, should I put anything below the base like sand or concrete?
It seems when I stand on it now with nothing underneath it gives a bit.

Whenever I set a tub or shower base I always set the unit on a bed of mortar.
The mixture not soupy, just a firm wet slurry that will compress/push out around the edges of the tub.
Once the unit is set, make sure you go behind it after a short period of time and bank up the excess where you can.
This adds support to the unit.
