I just got a new Campbell Hausfeld compressor that came with an impact gun. It's rated at 250 ft/lbs max. I've never owned an impact before(always wanted one). I've done some searching and it seems that a 250 ft/lbs model is fairly common but they range up past 1000 ft/lbs. What can I expect to get out of this besides taking off tires? The only other use I can think of is working on suspension for example where there are rusted stuck bolts.

An impact wrench is useful for heavy stuff as you mentioned. I like to use my 3/8" drive air ratchet when working under the hood. You will find, however, none of the nuts and bolts you commonly use will require more than 100 ft lbs of torque. Check the strength (grade) of the bolts you are using to convert their required torque.

It's not an everyday tool, but it's sure nice when you need it.

hitting those rusted exhaust and suspension bolts with an impact seems to break them or round them off more often than getting them out. Then you really have a project on your hands. Like chandler says, develop a feel for when to use it and when to lay off.

Appreciated, thanks all. Looking forward to using it over the years to come.

Don't forget to oil it [daily] before each use.

I have both air-powered and electric models. Never use one to install a bolt into a threaded hole. Removes the threads right snappy. Then the bolt won't hold anything.
I also use it to install lag screws into wood. Sure beats a socket wrench, even with a cheater bar. Very useful when hanging wood gates on wood posts with metal hinges. Draws it up tightly.

larry is right! alll bollts are not created equal. do not over tighted or you will become aquainted with an easyout/screw-bolt extractor. there is probably an adjustment screw/knob that will allow you to increase/decrease torque. oil is key!!!
