This may be a silly question, but here goes. I am going to replace our rented water softener with one we have bought. When I examined the input/output of the new system, the input was on the right, the output on the left. However our home is plumbed with the input on the left and the output onthe right. While I can replumb the pipes, I was wondering are options available for "lefthanded" vs "righthanded" homes.

Not silly at all. In fact a very good question and important not to get it wrong.
What brands are in volved? What kind of by-pass was there before; connected to the unit?
There should be no problem if you can switch the plumbing, just be sure that you never plumb it in backwards!!!
Kinetico makes a by-pass that is universal; it doesn't matter which side the in/outs are located, so you don't have to do a major reworking of the plumbing.
