I am installing a smarthome network box to route my phone and sat tv through. Right now I plan to place the cabinet next to the existing fuse box.
Is there a minimum distance I should keep away from the fuse box?

I believe the NEC states 36" on all sides needs to be clear.

You must have 36 inches in front of the panel, and panel must sit within a 32 inch space with nothing in that space.
in other words. you must be able to place a large box (like a refrigerator box) that is 32 inches wide and 36 inches deep in front of the panel, completely blocking the panel.

If you take the quoted line out of context, it could mean that you should move the fridge in front of the panel and completely block it. My wife and I got the fridge halfway down the basement stairs before we realized that all we really needed to do was grab a measuring tape. :)
Seriously... Does code prevent an LV panel from being mounted in the next cavity? The telephone NID in my 35-year old house is flush-mounted in a box next to the panel.

I think the NEC answers didn't answer the question that was asked at all. I wouldn't put it in the next stud space, just like you shouldn't run your tv/telephone/data and other low voltage within a foot of ac on paralle runs. I'd worry about picking up a hum or some interference.
Funny, Rick. But watch out, somebody might think you're serious, as they did with a couple of my humorous comments. see below
