I am replacing my heat pump. I need to find out the current tonnage that my Heat Pump unit is. I have a Carrier, model 38cq039340. I believe the unit is 25 years old. Any help would be appreciated

It looks like it's 3.5 ton.
If you are getting a new system, the dealer should do a Manual-J(Load Calc.) on your home. Your home I'm sure has been updated over the years with new windows, attic insulations... ect..

As per manufacturer literature, your unit ratings are as follows:
Cooling mode capacity: 34,500 Btuh (at 95F outdoors)
Heating mode capacities:
37,500 Btuh (at 47F outdoors), and
22,000 Btuh (at 17F outdoors)
Heat Pump sizes are determined by their cooling capacities. Your unit is then a 3-ton.
But I could not agree more with Jay11J. A heating/cooling load calculation should be done. A tit-for-tat replacement is not the best way to go. Far be from it.
