I currently have a Rheem gas water heater, standard venting. Last year I replaced the furnace with a sealed combustion unit. The installers closed up the vent hole to the attic. I still have a vent hole in the floor to the crawl space, presumably for combustion air for the water heater, and I'd like to close it up to eliminate draft and bugs. I was thinking of putting in a direct vent water heater so I wouldn't need the vent hole. Does this make sense? By the way, the furnace and water heater are in a closet and the water heater is next to the wall.

That vent hole in the floor probably is not enough for a new WH, and code requires air inlet in the top of the closet space as well as the bottom.
Direct vent units cost a lot more.
