I have an older model carrier heat pump that has worked fine all summer and so far this winter. The last nights have been in the low 20's so it has ran almost constantly. It began to ice up in the wee hours of the morning this morning. It is not low on freon, so I assume it is not going into the defrost mode as all heat pumps should when it is below 40 degrees for so. Am I correct and how do I correct this problem. By the way this is an all in one system, the evaporator and condensor is all in one cabinet outside the house. Help!!!!

Might let it run in AC for a very short time. Then go back to heatpump see if 4 way valve works. If it does melt some . Next check the defrostboard. The boards all work in different ways some on time some on temp some on ice build up.
When it gets down to 20o or 15o cost is about the same with the elements on EME or AUX.
