I have estimates for comparable variable speed furnaces and central air conditioning from Carrier and Rheem. The Carrier system is a few hundred dollars cheaper, but not enough to matter if the Rheem is better equipment. Does anyone have opinions about which would be the better system?

What is the model # of both furnace you getting a bid on?

That will help us tell what you may be best to get.
