Hi all, I've got my heating and hot water set to come on via a timer. Not too sure what sort of system I have got to be honest, but we have a gas boiler in the kitchen, an immersion heater in the bedroom cupboard and a water tank in the loft.

Anyway, when the heating comes on, and then periodically whilst the heating is on, there is a rumbling sound from the loft, to be honest it sounds like a wave at sea brewing and then crashing??? Then the odd banging pipe.

Anyone got any idea what this could be? We've lived in this 12 year old house for 4 years, and this has only just started to happen of late.

Any ideas on how to sort it out would be appreciated :)

Really need more information. :o Should I assume everything is natural gas fired?

Does the rumbling (crashing wave sound) happen when the boiler in the kitchen is on and the water heater in the loft comes on? OR, does the rumbling come from the loft after the boiler in the kitchen comes on and is heating up the house.

Should I assume that this is a steam system? ;) You did not state if it is a hot water baseboard/radiator system or a steam system. Since you stated that you have a boiler and not a furnace, I will assume that you do not have a FHA (forced hot air) system.

Many things can cause noises in the system. Usually it is due to the expansion and contraction of the pipes. Sometimes the floor settles, or expands due to moisture or water leaks, and pipes sit differently through walls and floors, radiators settle on old wooden floors and creeking and scraping is sometimes heard. Sometimes loud 'BANGing' is heard on steam systems.

With the limited information you supplied, I will assume you are hearing a bang or two on your steam system.

Also need to know if anything was adjusted or changed on the boiler or radiators recently and if you made any modifications in the piping system to the radiators. This of course is assuming that you have a steam system.

Give us some info so that we may help you out.
