Hi
Tried searching through other posts, didn't see anything like our problem.
GE washer, model #WJSR2070B9WW and that is the correct #, double checked it as well, it doesn't seem to show up anywhere when you search for it. Top load, about 4 years old, but only used about 2 years-though with 2 teenage girls in the house, it gets a good work out
Last night problem started, during the agitation it squeals really loud. Still works-though we're not using it, still agitates just the loud defeaning squeal. Husband took off the front, can't see anything that could be causing it-but granted, he doesn't know what to look for lol. He said during the spin cycle it does NOT squeal, and it does spin in the opposite direction during the spin cycle-not sure if all machines do that or not.
Just trying to figure out if it's cheaper to fix it, or buy something used till we can afford to buy something better....
Great site you have here, have it saved to my favorites for future endeavors aka: problems lol ;)

Start the machine; let it fill and advance to the agitate cycle. Lift the lid, hold down the lid switch with something non conductive and watch the agitate cycle. The agitator should be working back and forth but the tub should be almost stationary. A little movement of the tub is ok [like a couple inches]. If the tub is trying to move more than that or trying to spin, most likely the problem is the brake is going bad which means replacing the transmission and brake assembly. $$$$ Best bet is to buy a new Whirlpool, Roper, or Kenmore top loader.

Went to national chain cheap tools outlet store Christmas shopping last night and bought something I always thought I should have: A mechanics stethoscope; $3 on sale! Looks just like doctor stethoscope except where that doctor disc is, they have this metal rod you place up against the sound. (Also bought me another multi-function digital voltmeter as a stocking stuffer for someone: $3 on sale!! (A $16-20 value)
You can PM me for name of store. (Not sure of board rules on posting it directly on this forum board)

Well thank you for the replies! He ended up taking it in that night to a repair shop....They said the tub was cracked and was leaking water, amazing because it wasn't when we had it filled at home.... So, ended up buying a new one. I would've preferred buying a Whirlpool, and even looked at one from Roper as well. But, since $ is an issue currently-oh what fun the holidays are lol, had to go with the place we had gift cards for...Sams Club. And, wouldn't you know it, the only one in our price range was the same exact freaking washer lol... :wall: model # is different though, made sure of that. I'm guessing there was something wrong with the model we had, especially since it's not listed anywhere.
Thanks again for your help!

Cracked tub? Literally the metal?, and not just some (porcelain)coating had a crack? Was it right in the middle at the bearing where water then seeped into the bearing, thus causing the squeal?

If you bought a top load GE, you have the same machine as before. The design is simple enough but they're cheaply made which is why they don't last. The tub is plastic.
