I'm going to be replacing my 30 yr. old Carrier gas furnace with a Trane XV80. My home is approx. 50 yrs. old. The chimney was just checked and has no terra cotta at the bottom and the exterior pointing shows no signs of bulging. Sales rep from HVAC co. says its not necessary to place new chimney liner if I'm going with the XV80($4000 w/o the liner); he said it would have to be done with the XV90 along with other modifications. A competing HVAC bidder(who would install a American Standard 80 for $5800 w/o the liner) said that without installing a new chimney liner would void any Trane/American Standard warranty? Anyone familiar with this?

Is there a gas fired water heater sharing this? I would line it no matter what.. You need a liner if you go with any 80% system.

If you don't have a gas water heater, you don't need a liner, the PVC will go right up, and there will be a cover to keep the rain out, just the two PVC sticking out.... Otherwise, if you do have a gas water heater, then the 90% needs to go out the side of the home, and a liner put in for the gas water heater itself.

I don't know the full warranty of the 80% system. but I would say it can void the warranty.

Cost of gas is not going down, I would look into the XV95 (XV90 are not made anymore unless there are some left in your area), you can get credit from the gas company, and maybe electric company since it's variable speed system.

If you do go with the XV lines, be sure you get a two stage t-stat!

Hi and thanks for responding. I do have a gas fired water heater. Why the new liner though if my current chimney is in decent condition? I was told to get the 80% if I'm going to keep the existing duct system in my 50 yr. old house, aling with making no other modifications to the utility room.
The sales rep mention nothing to me that not placing a PVC liner would void the warranty. It was another HVAC installer.

What is your chimney made/built out of? What is inside of it?

??? Not sure what is ment by that.. If your ductwork is undersized, neither the 80 or 90 is going to make it better.

90% MUST be vented in PVC pipes!
