I have a century old house that my fiance and I just bought. Upon moving in we ripped up the carpet in the masterbedroom and found beautiful hardwood floors that had been stained a beautiful color. The only problem is that the previous owners were very careless in painting and spilled paint all over the floors near the walls (the middle of the floor looks great). We've had flooring people come in to give us estimates on having the floors refinished and they all seem to agree that they can't guarantee the same color stain because of the type of wood - a fir?
My fiance and I got some murphy's oil soap and diluted it and seem to be able to get the paint up with a scraper and the rough side of a sponge. The only problem is that it takes the varnish off and you can still see residue from where the paint used to be. We might be able to live with the residue but the shine is something we'd like to put back. Is this something we could do ourselves? Any suggestions? We've only done a small corner area.
FYI - we're new to being handy and don't know the lingo so any explicit directions would be greatly appreciated.

I think a total refinish is the only way you're going to get a even look. Scrape off all the paint and finish, then bleach any residual discoloration from the paint until the wood's all the same shade. Then finish it again. Big job, but definitely a DIY project.
