New to the forum and lots of good info here.
I've looked for this issue for a while now and no luck.
I'm sure its been covered and I hate to ask what I think is a n00b question (i'll keep looking) but here goes anyway.
I noticed today that the second floor unit is running the aux strips first and not the heat pump.
It was around 45 degrees F outside and air was hot coming out. Checked the unit outside and no action going on. I've suspected it for a while, but have just started trying to catch it in the act.
Charge was checked in the summer and a bit added, but not too low to function OK, so I don't think that is the current issue.
I guess I would like to know what to check to try and isolate the problem to either a relay, t'stat wiring or something other.
Frankly, the unit could have been like this for a while and I just did not put two and two together. We have gas downstairs and an open foyer so we get a bit of heating that way.
it might be as simple as the autonmatic setback t'stat not being wired correctly and I'm thinking of just putting the old one back in to see.
I do not have HVAC training, but am quite handy with systems and trying to isolate problems.
It would be great to figure out if I have a chance at fixing this or if I should call in a tech.
thanks,

does the outdoor unit have power?
Fan and compressor run in cooling mode.
Outside temp at 45 deg.
Inside was at 67, turned on cooling to setpoint of 62 and fan came on. I'm assuming the compressor did too.
Has to be the t'stat wiring, right? or is there something in the air handler I should be looking at?
thx,
