Just wondering if anyone has tried to use a webcam for a security camera. I was thinking of mounting it just inside an attic vent, or under an eve. I know there are issues with maximum distance for USB cables, weather, temperature, focusing, etc.

I've not done it myself but know a few that have. Some put them all over the house and in windows looking outside. Cool part is you can watch them while you're away.

The USB distance can easily be overcome with a _powered_ USB hub. Or two.
Can I ask why you're planning using a webcam when you can get a real camera with night vision, audio and all that for about the same price? ($40 from Sam's Club.) Watching it remotely would be one reason I guess. But a simple capture card would allow you to do the same.

Security of a child is above all other possible reasons .
If you're that worried about your children's safety/actions on the Internet, the best thing is to get the computers out of their rooms.
That is how our local computer users group, in cooperation with the state and local police, instruct attendees of our Internet classes.
