We need to replace our current drop in range. Can I buy a freestanding range? Or a slide in? Will I have to cut the 'base' from under my drop in? Can anyone help me :)

Yes, you can change the range type. As you stated, you will have to trim the top to allow the new range to fit in. The best way to cut it is with a router, but that will not get back tight against the wall, so a saw will need to be used sometime. Best to use a fine tooth hand saw like a back saw. measure CAREFULLY, and often. There are metal trim pieces that will help cover the gap, if there is one.

Yes, you will need to remove the "base", or little section of cabinetry under your old drop in range. Freestanding and slide-in ranges need to sit on the floor. If you have a rough floor under the range area that is lower than your finish floor in the main part of the kitchen, you should also install some plywood or other flooring material to make it all as flush as pracrical. This will make it much easier to slide the new range in when installing it, and also slide it out for maintenance in the future.
You may also need to modify the countertops on either side to accomodate the new range. I have lots of information on my website:
