I have older wood floors in the 2nd story of my home and will be covering them with carpeting soon. They are pine and in very rough shape. I am curious about ideas to stop some of the squeeking before I put down the carpeting.

You can screw the flooring to the floor joists before carpeting - it will help greatly - though probably not eliminate the squeaks completely. I just finished pulling up/reinstalling my old wood floors that squeaked/creaked terribly. Had to screw down the sub floor to eliminate the squeaks...

thezster is right - you can screw or nail them, but the squeaks may also be originating from the subfloor sitting on the joists. You may want to try and screw/nail into them through the pine. For a bigger project... you can remove the pine and fasten the subfloor securely - that should really do the trick.
The carpet won't hide squeaks, but will muffle them a little.
Good luck!
