Hello to everyone. Our AC unit is old. Probably been the same one since it was built in 1984. I wouldn't doubt it. We have been running heat then we got a warm snap so the AC ON was run and I noticed a buzzing sound later that night. Went outside and the whole AC cage was hot to the touch, buzzing and there was a burnt smell, fan wasn't moving. Haven't tried heat.
I'm new to the game and I'm hoping I can fix it myself. Does anyone know what it could mean. It gets power but just buzzes and get's really hot.
Thanks.

Could be the starting capacitor for the motor is shot. Probably going to need professional attention.

Yeah, that's just par for the course. I was thinking if it was the capacitor I could just replace from what I've been reading on this forum but it but it doesnt seem that easy.
Normally what does that mean, replacing a part or the whole unit? If it's the whole unit and I have to tell my wife, I want to be clear, under cover and away from the blast zone when she goes off.

I'm going to wait for one of the HVAC pro's to answer you on that, but I suspect at 23+ years old it may be getting a little long in the tooth for repairs.
