In the past when I purchased/installed some Quick-Step Uniclic brand laminate floating flooring I also purchased the "installation kit" which included the tapping block, pullbar, and spacers. Now I plan on purchasing/installing another brand, maybe Trafficmaster, Dupont, Shaw, Armstrong, Pergo, haven't decided quite yet. My question is can I use those same "installation kit" tools I used for the Quick-Step for any of the other brands, or does every brand require their own similar but somehow specialized tools to bump and pull and space the planks?

Most of the kits are brand specific. In the big picture that cost of a new kit is not very much.

We bought an installation kit at the store where we bought our tarkett laminate. It was a generic kit and the store sold other types of laminate and had no other kits, it seems to work well. We also have recently helped a friend put down laminate which was "luxury click" brand and our kit seemed to work great on it. He was using a cut piece of laminate and snapping that into the groove and using that as a tapping block and it worked well however using the tapping block from the kit was alot quicker.
Our only problem with the kit is that the spacers were not the right size so we had to buy some that were. If there was a brand specific kit I would spen the money on it though, espcially if you have alot of flooring to do.

I don't really have a lot of flooring to do, just a kitchen area 7ft x 16 ft. I'm not sure if the install kit I purchased before along with the Uniclic Quick-Step brand was actually brand-specific, it could have been generic but it was sold by that company. The hard plastic wall spacers are adjustable and I don't see why they wouldn't work with any other brand. As mentioned, if it came down to it and my tapping block didn't work for some reason with another brand, I could use a piece of cut-off laminate for tapping. I found the pull bar tool to be indispensable for past jobs along the final edge pieces, and if for some reason that didn't work on the different brand I would have to either break down and buy the brand-specific kit or improvise otherwise somehow for the final edge pieces.
Will more than likely be purchasing laminate flooring (in two days) for upcoming little kitchen job at Home Depot or Lowes, so am unsure if sales person(s) there will be of much help answering my specific concern here about the kits, but it won't hurt to ask I guess.

I bought Quick Step's installation kit as well. Most reasons why you should buy brand specific installation kits (if they provide t) is b/c if the manufacturer's installation instructions "require" it, it could void the warranty if a problem should arise. I'm sure you can use the wall spacers that you already have.

If you know what brand and type of flooring you like and you're planning on buying, you could always look up the installation instructions on-line before purchasing if you don't get any specifc answers at the Big box store.

Any reason why you're not sticking with Quick Step still?

Any reason why you're not sticking with Quick Step still?

Because I'll be purchasing from one of the big box stores mentioned, I'm fairly certain they don't sell Quick Step brand, but I haven't checked for sure, otherwise I would probably just go Quick Step again this time. I'll be traveling out of state in a few days and purchasing the flooring at a big box store that I haven't ever visited and have no idea what brands they happen to sell yet. I suppose if I really needed to know I could try to call long distance and ask somebody who works there...
But I'm cheap :o and I don't like to call distance (or buy different install kits) if I don't absolutely have to.
Thanks for all input on this one.
