After the water softner runs during the night, the tap water is salty for a few minutes when 1st used in the morning. What could be wrong ?

What kind of softener do you/ Make/model?
What kind of salt are you using? Solar, block, pellet, evaporated?
Usually, salty water is caused by inadequate backwashing due to lack of pressure or volume. A line may be clogged or the valve may be maladusted. The salt dosage may be too high.

Is it more than one year old. If so, then the warranty is probably up. I think a service call may be more than the value of the unit. It may have just run its course and time for a new, but better, unit.
