We are renovating our bathroom. When we moved in we removed some awful paneling from the bottom half of the walls only to find that this was (of course) covering the residue of removed tiles. We tried to unsuccessfully put up bead board to cover it up, but would prefer the walls bare. Is there any way that we can remove the residue and smooth out the walls without replacing the sheetrock?

No, it's not likely. Scraping the glue and skimming the walls with a heavy layer of joint compound might be possible if you can scrape most of the heavy glue off, but skimming that much area would also be a lot of work.

Replacing the bottom 3-1/2 to 4 feet of drywall would be easier than trying to skim it. The wall would be a lot more even too.

I hope this helps,
