I live in South Florida and I am interested in adding an entire house water filtration system. I do not know much about it and I want to get some info. Can anyone give me some good advice? How much will it cost? How much work does it take to have it installed? Any info would be appreciated.

Thank You in advance.

Have you had a lab test your water yet? If not, you should ask for organic and inorganic testing, to get started.

Are you thinking a water softener or a filter?

Are there any odor, color or taste issues?

More info needed.

Water treatment cost can range from $24.00 (for a simple sediment filter) to more than $10,000 for a sophisticated disinfection and troubled-water equipment. And don't confuse price with cost.

Any proper advice must be based on a few factores including what condition your water is in, what is the desired result (may even include unveiling problems you may not even know you have), available space and other logistics and making assurances that your choice fits your needs and ability to pay, maintain and service.

At least test for hardness, iron, tannins (common in FL), sodium, pH, TDS. A local health board or lab can determine if your water has any health concerns/issues. Nitrates/nitrites, arsenic and organic compounds, etc., have been know to cause concern with homeowners.

We would like to help you but need more information.

OK, I guess I will start by getting my water tested. Now I will just have to find out who will do it. I'd rather not have a company who sells water filtration systems do it b/c I am sure they will BS me on what I need. My water does not have an odor or discoloration but the wife feels there is something wrong with the water. I do have to use the filtered fridge water to cook because it will make the food taste funny.

I may be right about some water treatment dealers as they are in business.

You can locate a water specialist by going to the Water Quality Association - www.wqa.org - and do a search for local professionals. These folks have been cerified as water specailists and should stir you right.

Even if you went with a local water softener business, you are not obliged to buy and just get different opinions. The Yellow Pages/Book is an easy listing.

Let us know.
