I want to get new chain but NOT pay sears price for it,but I don't understand all the lingo? My saw is an 18 inch model358
I wnt to know how to purchase the chain by dimension 3/8 I think link? and which type chisel or rip? The owners manual does not give any info ,Thanks

Look closely at the part of the chain that travels inside the groove of the bar. There should be identifying numbers on this part of the chain. Look for this number and your bar length at the big box stores. Hope this helps. Good luck with your search.

I prefer chisel chain. A little bit more difficult to sharpen, but cuts much faster than chipper chain.

Problem is I don't know which is the original chain and which chains are right for the saw.

You have not given the complete model number of the saw. The chain part number from the parts list would be helpful.

If you will look at the chain packs at the big box stores, there will be listed the saws which each chain will fit.

Pitch is the distance between the teeth. I think yours is 3/8 in. Gauge is the thickness of the bottom of the chain that runs in the groove on the bar.
