we would like to move our stove to the middle of the kitchen and do not want a over stove hood. is it possible to purchase a stove (not a stove top) that uses a down draft that does not need to be vented to the exterior.

You definitely need ventilation of some kind to remove cooking odors and smoke/steam. And yes, there are downdraft models available from several manufacturers. JenAir makes one with a popup hood in the back of the range.
