Hello everyone. I am new here and just found this great forum

I have a problem with a rust spot in the bottom of my tub, far away from the drain. It looks like the last owner put some kind of white coating or sealant to cover it, but now the rust is peeking through. :(

Could the rust create a hole in my bathtub? I don't want water to leak to the unit below

What can i do?

Thank you for your time

Is this an enameled-steel tub, cast-iron or fiberglass?
If e.-s. is the glazed finish chipped?, or is it more like a "watermark" on a coffee table were no coasters have been used?

I honestly don't know what kind of tub it is, it came with the condo when it was built in 1996.

So this place isn't really that old.

I don't think the finish is chipped, it looks like a rust pit that's getting bigger.

There is also a second tub in our condo, and in almost the exact spot there is what appears to be some work that has been done to the tub, like some patchwork or something so I suspect the this is a defect in these tubs.

I thought I would get at least more than one reply, and judging by all the people who have viewed this post it cannot be that people simply haven't seen this post.

I am sorry for bothering you all and thought this would be a helpful place to visit.

and try to take it easy :) ,,,laugh a little, it`s good for the soul! :D.
Anyway about your tub,,,can you feel any chipped surface at the spot?
Makes me wonder about defects though(like you say), when the other is almost the same.
Can you find any manufacturers name on it?
Have you tried the condo`s builder?, maybe they could steer you to who the plumber was,,this may help.

I will if I can,,but don`t be upset if it takes me awhile to get back. :) :) :)

heh-heh I'm actually very grateful to you Olsen for being the only person to reply.

I do appreciate it. I work with many people in my work and often refer people to helpful websites since I know many of them use advertising to stay running.

I cannot tell if the bathtub has been chipped because someone has put some type of coating or expoxy or something over the rust.

I don't wanna peel off the coating or chip it away.

Thanks for your help though I do appreciate it.

Dude, take a pill. This isn't an especially active forum as forums go. And most people will read an item to nsee if they can help and if they don't have anything useful they don't post.

It's not like people are thinking "Ewww this guy has a rusty bathtub I'm not gonna talk to him."

If it were me, I'd get the patch off the thing and see what's going on underneath. Sounds like you've got a cast iron tub that has a chip in the enamel. If so, I'd get the old patch off and put a new one on--at leat you'd have a few more years before the rust leaches through again, or if you use the right product it may not leach through at all.

To determine if it's cast iron or acrylic, tap on the thing. Is it solid or does it feel like plastic?

There are plenty of good people here willing to help. You really havent provided much info at all so theres really not much anyone can tell you. So what kinda tub is it cast iron, acrylic, something else. Why not take a picture so that we can see what you can see.
