Designing Kitchens and Bathrooms - replacing cracked tile

we have a dozen or more cracked ceramic tiles in our kitchen. we don't have any of the original tile left, but we really need to get these tiles replaced--they've become a hazard & are right in front of the stove. The rest of the kitchen floor tile is in perfect condition, so we hate to replace all of it because of the 10% that's broken.
any ideas on a mosaic or other tile design that might work---without lifting up or breaking even more tiles?

That is a significant amount of broken tile and makes me wonder what kind of subfloor these are laid on.

It sounds like there is movement in the subfloor allowing the tile to crack.

If you put new tile in, it will crack eventually as well if the subfloor is not fixed.


To answer your question though;

Dig out the grout around the affect tiles with a grout saw.

Carefully take a chisel and start hammering the center of each damaged tile, careful not to hit a good tile around it.

Do this until you can remove the whole tile.

Remove the thinset with chisel.

Clean the area.

Lay thinset

Install new tile

Regrout

It won't be fun.
