How do I remove the starter on a Briggs and Straton engine on an 18hp Craftsman Riding Mower?

It's not a hard job, usually just two bolts.

BE SURE to disconnect the battery before you start.

There's a gear on the end of the starter motor held on by a pin. Sometime the gear teeth break and the motor may still be ok.

Is it a single piston or twin, the V cylinder OHV model, or the older opposed L-Head twin ??
I've removed several starters from the older opposed twins.
It's easier if shrouds/flywheel is removed, but, I've done it by removing the top and side shrouds and reaching in under the flywheel with a 1/2 box end wrench. It takes a while but is doable.
when reinstalling I thoroughly clean all threads of bolts and block with WD-40.
hope this helps,
if we had model, type and code of engine, would help.
thanks,
