Hello,
Got a busted maul handle that broke off inside the head so I can still use it. I know I need to clean out the head. I see a metal circle looking thing inside it. OK, I don't know what I am doing and any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

You'll just need to drive the broken out piece out of the head. The metal ring is nothing more that an expander; it's driven into the end grain of the handle after it's inserted in the head to hold the handle tight. Same use as a wooden wedge that's commonly used (and what may come with your replacement handle).

To remove the old wood from the head use a drill. Drill out as much of the old handle as you can/need to be able to pound out the rest.

That too, but be careful of that metal insert; don't want to break a drill bit in the process.

Thanks for the info. I read that I could stick the head in an oven set at 250 for an hour and it will expand it for an easy pound out of wood and ring. Then to set the handle before it cools off. Does this sound right?
