I am attempting to remodel a bathroom.
All the DIY books I have seen on this subject say that the hardibacker should be installed OVER the tub flange to a quarter inch from the tub rim.
Wouldn't this practice bow the hardibacker outward(because of the thickness of the flange)?
I was told at the big box store to apply the hardibacker to were it will meet the top of the flange. Then when you add the tile, the tile will hang lower than the hardibacker(To a quarter of an inch from tub rim). He said to butter enough tile adhesive to the back of the bottom row of tiles to fill in the space where the tile overhangs the hardibacker. Then fill the quarter inch gap with bathtub caulking.
I am using half inch hardibacker, so adding quarter inch spacer to the studs so that the hardibacker will be installed over the flange won't work. The area where the hardibacker and the drywall meet would be different thicknesses.
HELP!!!!
One more question.
Is the drywall taped to the hardibacker or just filled with caulking?

I usually rip shims to add to the studs so that the backer board overhangs the flange. Another option is to notch the studs 1/8" or so to provide a recess for the flange. I tape the DW seam and estend the tile over the joint.
I'm not sure that just overlapping the tile wouldn't have the same effect. If your drywall is already up overlapping the tiles only may be your only choice.
