With all the different materials that blinds are available in, I would presume that there are materials that hold up better in sun, especially in a Florida application. I noticed that plastic do not do well but wonder what materials could be suggested for durability. These would probably be horizontal but could also be vertical. Any suggestions based on experience?

If you're looking for hard treatments, then Solar Shades are best for sun protection, but they don't provide for night time privacy. If you need privacy, then blackout Roller blinds/shades might be better, but unless they're outside mounted, some light would come in the sides so you'd probably want to hang some curtains with them. They come in the vinyl type or fabric. A fabric Roman shade with blackout or thermal lining also works great, but that might have to be custom ordered because I'm not sure if they come in readymades.
Your can also have window film put on your windows.
