I bought a Canon camcorder for home video (vacations, birthday parties, etc......) It's a ZR850. Not HD, but it does shoot in widescreen format.
The thing I don't like about this camera is there's no good way to get a good signal from the camera to a television.
If you transfer the video from the camera via firewire to a pc first, and then burn it on to a DVD, then watch the DVD on the TV, the picture is much better than if you plug the camera directly into the TV using the three component inputs.
Question: is there any way to adapt the firewire output of the camera to the HDMI input on the TV? I haven't seen any cables or adapters out there that do this, so I'm assuming the answer is no!
Any other options?
Thanks,
Phil

Miranda announced a Firewire (iLink) to HDMI converter about a year ago. MSRP was well over $2,000. It would be a little silly to spend $2k to see the picture from a $300 camcorder.
Your camera doesn't have component video outputs. The breakout cable that attaches to your TV is composite video plus stereo audio. The conversion circuitry in the camera isn't the best. It's really there as a convenience so you can see a picture.
Firewire to DVD is the best way to go to maintain the quality. And in reality, a $300 camcorder isn't going to produce pictures that compare to hi-def HDMI.

Rick,
That's what I thought and since I didn't buy the camera for HD productions; I don't mind going through the extra steps to burn a DVD.
It would have been nice to simply plug it into the TV and see a decent picture; but, oh well.......like you said, you don't get much for 300 bucks.
And actually, I didn't even pay that much for the camera because Best Buy had it on sale for $100 off instantly (no mail in rebate) and then I used some coupons I had and saved another 15 bucks so the camera only cost me about $185.
Thanks for your help,
Phil

Someone on another forum I belong to mentioned this:
http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC110/index.php
Converts analog to firewire in either direction for under $250.
