Hi, I have recently purchased a 1987 Yamaha Terrapro. We replaced the battery but we are not having any luck starting it electrically. It only 'clicks' when you try to turn it over. Can anyone give some advice as to how to proceed from here? Are there fuses that we could replace? where is the starter motor and how much does that usually cost to replace?
Thanks

If you have a new or known good battery and you get a clicking when you hit the iginition key to start it, you would have a problem with electrical connections or cables -solenoid or starter.

First check the cables and their respective connections. Make sure they are clean as well as tight. With that done (and still having a problem) trace the battery cable to the starter solenoid.

You may have one of two configurations - a remote solenoid which would be away from the starter or one that is "piggy backed on the starter.

If you have the remote type, first locate it and jump from the terminal that goes to the battery cable around the solenoid to the other connection going to the starter. If you get a good response from the starter, check the connections. Assuming they are good, you probably have a bad solenoid.

If the solenoid is on the starter, you'll have to pull the starter and have it checked for, not only the solenoid, but the starter armature and brushes as well.

Hope this helps,

Bob
