I have a varnished bookcase. I plan on painting it with an enamel paint, but would like some kind of faux finish on it. I don't want to put a whole lot of work into this, but still want it to look nice. I was thinking of taking a rag and dipping in a darker paint or gel finish and wiping streaks on it. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forums!

I can't help you much on the faux painting but for the paint job to be successfull you need to first remove any wax/polish, sand the varnish and apply a coat of a solvent based primer.
