I am in the process of finishing my basement and have decided to sheetrock around the main duct running through the middle of the ceiling. I framed out both sides with 2' x 4's and was going to screw the 3/8"s sheetrock right up next to the duct fastening on each outter edge of the 2 x 4s. There is nothing to screw into in the middle and I am afraid it will hang. I was trying to avoid running more 2 x 4s horizontally because I would lose another 1 1/2" of height. ANybody have a suggestions?

How wide is the spacing between 2x's?

3/8" drywall is kind of flimsy, especially on anything with more than 16" spacing.

5'-6 1/2' at the widest point. Would 5/8' make a difference with regard to sagging?

Thats an awfully wide span for any product. Its time for you to reconsider your options

5/8" is a lot stiffer but you still need to add framing.
