I have a STR-GX700es. I keep getting the same "Protection" error. However, I've found that if i have an empty set of RCA's plugged into the LD in Audio, It will work... although it's finicky. This makes NO sense to me, yet appears to work. I NEVER would've come up with this bandaid on my own, but a friend with less electronics knowledge came up with it. I hope this helps. and keep in mind- it doesn't work 100% of the time... and it might work better on different RCA jacks.
oh- and by "empty' i mean that the RCA's aren't actually connected to anything other than the "LD in" audio jacks.

Either an existing cable is damaged, or the unit is drawing to much power, and when you connect the RCA's, it lessens the power demand.
Triple check all your cables. Often times people will accidently stample or nail through them.
