anyone know if you can put a light on the same circuit as the smoke alarms? This is for an addition my buddy put on his house. We already wired it but I'm not sure if it's code here or not.
Thanks for any info,
ron

I'm pretty sure most counties discourage people from having detectors on circuits with other devices, i.e. lights, receptacles, etc.
You will have to check with your local authorities since they are the one's that have to sign off on all this work being done.
Your friend does have a permit for all this electrical work?

You need to check locally.
I believe it is a good idea to have a commonly used light on the smoke detector circuit, such as a hallway light. This way you will know quickly if the circuit breaker trips.

I agree with Bob. It's a good idea. Besides, most people are not going to be willing to waste 98% of the circuit's capacity by having only five 6-watt smoke detectors on it. However, I would suggest that you limit the other loads to just lighting, since lighting rarely overloads a circuit.

Thank you for the info. Don't know why I just didn't call the township myself and ask. I always go straight for the internet, sometimes I forget you can actually 'call' and talk to the right people..
Yes, all permits are pulled.
I do have the feeling we will have to take the light off the circuit but we'll see I guess.
Thanks again..
