View Full Version : Bamboo on a floating slab?

Our home has a "floating slab" concrete floor in the basement which I will soon be sealing with an epoxy sealant; this floor has a 1/2" or so gap between the floor and the wall all the way around the perimeter. I will also be covering the exposed cinder block walls with Drylok and installing a couple of dehumidifiers so as to keep the basement as dry as possible.

I have been told that I must not cover that gap between the floor and the wall. That being true, is it at all possible to install a (bamboo) wood floor on top of the sealed concrete floor? Lowes has interlocking bamboo wood flooring (and insulation that goes below it) that can be installed below ground level. However, the installation instructions call for the flooring to be installed flush against the wall. Since I can't do that, how would such a floor be installed in my basement? The only thing I can think of would be to screw a wood trim piece into the concrete, flush to the lip of the concrete slab, and then install the flooring against that piece of wood trim.

Any tips?

You cannot install a solid glue down bamboo floor or a floating floor without an expansion gap around the perimeter of the room. The floating floor would be acceptable providing that slab moisture is not an issue. You may adhere the finish trim to the wall, but it must not impede the floor from expanding and contracting.

It sounds as if you have had some moisture issues in the past, I would consider a ceramic tile floor or if you are set on a wood look, a laminate floor would be a more economical alternative to the bamboo in case of moisture issues. There are a couple of manufacturers that have bamboo patterns in laminate flooring.

Good Luck

question for the pro.

I not sure if your familiar with the home legend bamboo flooring @ home depot. It is not the engineered click that would be easier to install.
It is the simple tongue and groove style.
I just level my floors. I wanna float this bamboo if possible but many have said that i can't, what is your opinion on this. :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :gmorning:
