i have bought a second hand 50in screen sony rear projection tv and was told the lamp / bulb needs replacing it is quite a dark picture but i have also noticed that when i press the sky remote for all channels which is blue and white in colour it has a greeny yellowish tint either side in the top left and bottom right traveling halfway either side of the screen if that makes any sense is this because the lamp /bulb needs replaceing or is there another problem as well ?hope somone can help as i dont mind getting it fixed if its worth fixing ?

Bulbs do get weaker with intensity in time.
Yellow showing in lower right could be an indication of the tv being in a smoker's environment?? Mine is/was - and it cost me $300 to clean the screen, mirrors, engine and fan. The fan is on the lower right side (same as lamp) and the fan is directed toward the lower rt screen area.

Also,
Some replacement lamps may not come with it filled. Lamps are filled with a glycol fluid (type of antifreeze). This would be a good time to check the other lamp fluid levels as well.
Convergence is also another problem it could be, but wait till the lamp is replaced to see.

well fitted a new lamp/bulb today and although the tv is a bit brighter i still have the yellow /greenish hues either side top and bottom in the corners of the tv and the picture is not that great but is it because i am watching such a big screen my freind agrees with me as does my husband that its not blurry but not a clear picture if that makes sense lol
what do you think i should do next ?

After changing the lamps, a convergence alignment needs to be done which requires you to get into service mode.
I don't have the directions/manual for your set, so you may need to do some researching for a service manual.
If after you set the alignment in service mode and still have issues, you may have to replace your convergence board and/or IC's. Most of the time it's the IC chips that are usually located at the bottom, right hand side looking from the back.
You usually have to remove some screws so you can pull the board out. The IC's are soldered in.
