I want to install a new ceiling fan where no fixture had existed before. Since I have the option, is it better (sturdier & stronger) to attach the metal electrical box by screwing it directly into the side of a ceiling joist, or is it preferable to have the box on a crossbrace (either the metal prefab kind or made from a 2x4)? I know both ways are okay, but which is better, and will allow less vibration later on? Thanks.

Both are not necessarily okay. You need a fan rated box. You cannot use any old box. Get one that mounts with a brace between two joists.
